The Hoop and Grapes

Cocktail Bar | London | England | United Kingdom

Historic cocktail bar in London

"The Hoop and Grapes" is a traditional cocktail bar and pub located in the Aldgate district of London, England, and is part of the renowned Nicholson's chain. The venue is one of the oldest of its kind in the city and has a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. It survived the Great Fire of London in 1666, which halted just about 50 meters away, making it one of the few preserved timber-framed houses from that time. The building itself shows the marks of the centuries: the facade visibly leans forward and has been preserved through extensive restoration work prior to demolition, giving it a unique character. Today, it is listed as a historic building and is valued for its historical significance and architectural uniqueness.

Traditional pub with history

The interior of "Hoop and Grapes" combines historic charm with the typical coziness of a British pub. The space is generously designed, featuring exposed brickwork that has recently been cleaned and whitewashed walls that provide a surprisingly bright and inviting atmosphere. The furnishings are functional and unpretentious: dark wooden furniture, comfortable seating, and a central bar define the space. There are no outdoor areas like a beer garden, but its proximity to attractions such as the Sky Garden, the Tower of London, and the Old Spitalfields Market makes it a popular stop for visitors and locals. Especially on weekdays, the pub fills with people from the City in the evenings, creating a lively atmosphere.

Nicholson's pub in Aldgate

The drink selection is diverse and highlights the tradition of Nicholson's pubs. There is a wide variety of real ales, including well-known types like Nicholson's Pale Ale, as well as seasonal guest beers from local breweries. Craft beers and an impressive collection of craft gins complement the offerings, while the cocktail bar serves classic drinks at affordable prices—without the pretense of extravagant mixology. Particularly popular are the food pairings that emphasize the value for money. The menu features traditional British pub classics such as fish & chips, pies, and burgers, complemented by weekly specials with modern twists. The quality of the food is rated differently by guests: some praise the generous portions and flavor, while others occasionally report unavailable dishes or inconsistent service.

Authentic pub experience in London

The clientele is diverse: from tourists exploring the historic surroundings to commuters from the nearby financial district, and families looking for a simple meal, all are represented. The pub is accessible to wheelchair users and offers modern amenities such as free Wi-Fi, table reservations, and the ability to pay by credit card or digitally. The service is often described as friendly and attentive, with individual staff members like Elle, Shrushti, or Katie praised by guests for their helpfulness. However, during busy evenings, there may be wait times, and some visitors find the bar crowded or loud—a typical characteristic of a popular pub in a central location.

Standard Nicholsons pub. Beautiful, loads of history and authentic costruction, but a little lacking in atmosphere. Granted it was mid afternoon but still. Good choice of beers in ok condition. Staff running around a bit,

Lovely old pub but very hot and noisy. Food was disappointing as the steak and ale pie was burnt on the inside. However they did give us free drinks with our meal.

Spent a week in London close to this pub and visited a few times. Hazy IPA was great as well as the live music and overall atmosphere. Was a little disappointed in having to order through the app while seated, but it turned out ok. Saw other tables ordering through the server so I guess it’s hit or miss. Overall a nice experience. Thanks to the young lady at the bar for recommending the Hazy. Shawn and Stacy Williams.

Terrific pub and excellent service! We had a wonderful dinner and beers at this historic pub on the Aldgate High Street. Even though it was a Wednesday night, the pub was heaving and we didn't have a booking. The wonderful Damian recommended some beers, found us a table and served our meals. The beers were terrific, we loved our fish and chips, and fish pie, and Damian's service was super friendly and professional. Note that there is a 10% service charge for table service but Damian earned every penny of it!

Lovely old pub, a bit spoilt by a screen with rugby on while I was there, no one was watching it and it made the room really dark. We moved tables to behind screen where we could read the menu and had a very nice time

Lovely pub near the tube station. Love the vibe and the interiors but you need to be aware that it tends to be noisy and very busy

Me and my Grandma visited this place after we were told it was the oldest pub in London during a walking tour. We had dinner already but we got some fudge cake dessert. The inside is very cool- old brick and wood. The atmosphere was a bit loud but it’s a pub after all. We sat ourselves down and we had to go to the bar to order, it was around 9pm. The history was fascinating and the pictures- especially of the Great Fire of 1666 were so cool to look at (wish I took a picture of it). I highly recommend coming here.
